Washington, D.C.
There’s no better place to start than in the nation’s capital. Luckily for us, it also happens to be right down road! The city is home to a wealth of American history, not to mention the original Declaration of Independence itself. A parade will march down Constitution Ave on Monday, and fireworks famously take place on the National Mall that evening following a concert on the lawn of the Capitol. The National Parks Service lists a variety of other events happening on the Mall, which they refer to as the nation’s most important civic space.
New York, NY
Macy’s annual 4th of July fireworks display celebrates it’s 40th anniversary this year. Billed as the largest Independence Day fireworks display in the nation, the itinerary features fireworks launched from barges in the city’s East River. With a variety of viewing points across the city, and a fantastic lineup of musical performers, this Big Apple will make an awesome tribute to America on her birthday.
New Orleans, LA
Every day in New Orleans is a celebration, so when big holidays roll around, this city knows how to do them right. Take a road trip through the American South to see this historic town and party like it’s 1776 because this lively city is likely to be packed with patriotism. The annual fireworks display Go 4th on the River features dueling barges on the Mississippi River as they each set off a show of pyrotechnics.
Los Angeles, CA
Nothing says 4th of July like the dry summer heat of Los Angeles. Soak up the sun and enjoy the idyllic Pacific Ocean on one of LA’s many beaches, or check out the many events around the city. Parades, festivals, and a ton of fireworks displays turn the City of Angels red, white, and blue with patriotism.
Philadelphia, PA
The city where American independence was born and the Declaration was signed throws itself a multi-day festival each year to celebrate! The birthplace of America hosts a festival that includes a block party, free concerts, and of course fireworks! You can also visit Independence Hall to see the room where our nation was born.
Your Own Backyard, USA
Backyard barbeques are all-American all the time! Invite your friends, family, and neighbors over and throw some hot dogs on the grill. Homemade food and good company make for a perfect celebration, and you’ll avoid the crowds at major events! If fireworks are legal where you live, you can even put on your own show - but be sure to check local regulations and read up on fireworks safety first!
